Eklektek is a writing repository relevant for both the diversity of the intended subjects and themes, and the philosophical aspect of thought independent of belonging. Ek is abbr for kenetic Energy; Energy stored in motion. The term lek is a type of animal mating behavior that creates a paradox within Darwinian theory... a contradiction within the "Fisherian Runaway" hypothesis explaining, among other things, the extra-ornate plumages of birds. The etymology of lek in this context is from a Swedish noun denoting pleasurable, less rule-bound games and activities, something akin to 'play'. In other fun: Logic. The smallest logic satisfying all conditions is K. Iff you enjoy weird mixed metaphors and non-sequitur then you are in the right place. Lastly, the letter K is thought to have originated from a hieroglyph of a hand, which must be found apropos to the art of writing.

The Drift Trike

A ridiculous sport that combines childish fun with adult level danger. Let's ride.

The Local Motors Verrado

I've had a pair of these less than a month and have already, with the help of some friends, rolled them over 60 miles, simply rolled them over myself, gone through 8 sets of front tires and 6 sets of rear sleeves, had lots of laughs, used some band-aids, modified the battery for quick release recharge and brainstormed dozens of other upgrades, taken them up some hills, down some hills, recorded a couple, and in general had the most awesome time a guy can have on three wheels.

Eulogy

My father died just before Christmas. I wasn’t ready to make the announcement to my friends during the holidays, partly because I didn’t want to face it all at once, and partly because sympathy condolences don’t mix well with holiday cheer. But, it’s the new year and now it’s time.

Today I cried for him. I broke down a bit as I was writing this in my notebook at an Indian restaurant, Namaskar, in Koh PhanNgan, Thailand. Best Indian food in Thailand, highly recommended... also they politely ignored me crying into my Chai. Anyway, the point is, now it’s time to look forward in my life, but also, even though I don't feel ready, it's time to look back on his.

Flirting with Sirens

Full Moon. Or not. Perhaps the memory is a dream. Perhaps it was just the security lights from the beachhouses that illuminated the night instead of the moon as I remember. Whatever it was, the light darkness of the moon, or the dark lightness of the security lights, it was gentle; the night. The air was still, the aftermath of a storm passed. Entirely still. Completely. The air almost mischievously mockingly still against the subtle intensity of the sea.

Rules of Life

Time, once again, time to take all my scraps of paper and digitize them one-word-at-a-time.

I‘ve never understood the rules of life. When I was about 10 or 11 years old, as we were driving down the rural cascade mountain highway I asked my father to explain the different meanings of the stripes on the road. Why was there one white stripe on the side, yet double yellows in the center. He told me that you were not allowed to cross the double yellows in the center. Not understanding that meant just for passing other cars I asked what about if a deer jumps in the road in front of you. I was serious, laws don't make sense so it seemed to me a reasonable question concerning police enforcement. (This note has shown up multiple times and although the original intention was to digitize these scraps of paper so I can be less cluttered, I just can't seem to throw it out now)

An Elderly Couple and A Model Family

The tourists flock to the beach late in the morning. The locals had arrived hours ago and as it gets hotter, and the sun moves over the hill to shine down directly, they depart, one by one to abandon the scorching sand to the pasty skinned peoples of more northern latitudes. The vacancies allow the pale vacationers a place to squeeze in and find relief in whatever little bit of shade that’s left.

Ode to Desperation

It is from desperation I attempt to be a writer. It is from this moment of sitting in a loud, crowded public Tesco Lotus food court and watching the movements, robotic and trained by years of repetition, of the staff, the table cleaners, the cooks, and even the patrons. I feel seasick watching their daily motions of formulated responses; cells of a machine that operate according to lifelong consumer programming.

I am just another, but I must believe for my own sanity, that I can break free; if only in my mind, in my words, in my expression. Free from the complete and utter ridiculousness of this script we all follow, like rats of the pied piper.

Student Loan Justice

I knew what I was doing when I signed that promissory note for my student loan. I am not avoiding nor disavowing any responsibility for that action.

Occupy; San Diego

I was going to post THIS around the Civic Center for everyone to see, and leave my tent for others to use until such time as I completely distanced myself from the movement, or conversely, choose to join it again. I didn't get around to posting it, instead I ended up at the Civic Center on the eighth night, hoping to be inspired enough to continue on.

2009!

FIGHT!

In the right corner, weighing in at a buck thirty, here all the way from San Diego... the Trooper of Troopers, the King of Conundrum, the Italian Stallion; Eklektek, the Undisputed Champion of the Western United States... and sometimes Canada. Rooawr, crowd goes wild, clapping and cheering.

And in the left corner, weighing in at a gravitational force... the King of the Ring, The Krusher, The Weight of the World; Despair and Death, The Double D's, the Undisputed Champions of Life. Boo, Hissing, crowd throws rotten vegetables... rotten vegetable sales triple. Rotten vegetable salesman rejoice quietly, but pretend to boo and hiss with the rest.

Who will win in 09?! Stay tuned to find out. Just remember, "Float like a butterfly and sting like chlamydia"

Broken & Bruised

I was in the hospital when I woke up, three days after the accident. I had always assumed that nurses and doctors would disassociate themselves from their patients, it was just their job after all. Instead, they took an emotional investment in me and my recovery, and we were bonded, somehow directly emotionally linked. On days I suffered it was quite visible that my physical pain caused them emotional pain. I didn't understand it, why would they come to my bed and talk to me about life, sports, t.v. shows, when it would only bring us a bit closer? Why would they freely talk about their own personal experiences? Why not just come in, tell me what news of my body there was to tell and go on their way?

San Diego

The time has finally come, I am moving tommorow... SD is on its way and there ain't nothin' gonna stop me. I probably just jinked myself. I am going down there with my father and maybe a friend; we will drive his truck and tow a trailer.

OSD Resignation

It deeply saddens me to do this, but I am resigning my Occupation of San Diego.
I do not feel welcomed. Instead I feel pushed and demanded upon, obligated to a group that is not representative of my goals, aspirations, hopes, dreams for the future, and furthermore, not representative of the 99% so many of us are professing to represent.

Before I continue I want to make it clear that “my” goals and hopes for this movement were as follows;
1) Occupy, simply to be involved in the future of our country,
2) Positive publicity, growth, and pressure,
3) Pressure to accomplish;
a. Acknowledgement of grievances by the general public, our government, and the 1%,
b. Discussion with all 99% to form articulate, hierarchical, and specific grievances,
c. Discussion with 100% to work on solutions to said grievances,
d. Change.
